Oh Dolly!

My parents were born in 1941 and 1942. I grew up listening to The Drifters, The Crew Cuts, and Doris Day. I watched countless black and white movies with my father and have seen almost every John Wayne movie ever made. I know all about sock hops, ice cream floats, and dancing the jitterbug. That time seems just as much a part of who I am as my own teenage years in the 2000s. I have always been more into Doris than Brittany. I know all about drawing on your stockings and victory gardens. I may not have lived in that time, but my heart does.

For me, the 30s-50s was a time where America was young and carefree and learning their place in the world. Yes there was war, unrest, and the fear of the unknown future. But there was also a childlike innocence to the budding American culture. There was refinement in every day life. Women still dressed up from head to toe when they woke up in the morning. I'm not talking taking off pajamas and putting on yoga pants with no intention of actually doing yoga. I am talking full on dress, heels, pearls, and makeup.

I fell in love with the fashion from this time period. I love everything about clothes, the hair, and the makeup.  And I am not the only one! Upon doing some research I realized there were many other vintage enthusiasts who dress in period fashion in their every day lives! So when I got the opportunity to sew for one of them, I took full advantage. Miss Hettie Sky is a vintage fashion blogger in the UK. Her Instagram is a walk through time with her fabulous vintage style. If you love vintage clothing, you should definitely take a look! Her blog gives you insight into vintage fashion.

I knew I wanted to make something subtle, yet surprising for her. I love the 30s and 40s but nothing beats the circle skirts of the 50s. So I designed a plain black circle skirt but with a twist. The unique hem with the peekaboo plaid scallops really set this beautiful piece apart. Add in the matching waist band bow and you have the perfect piece to pair with a white vintage top and red accessories. Stepping out in this slice of Americana makes you want to go for a bicycle ride to your favorite picnic spot with a friend.
